JERUSALEM, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday evening that Israel will continue building in Jerusalem, a statement coming in a sensitive timing as the United States tries to facilitate the indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

"We will never again make Jerusalem a divided, disunited, and isolated city," local daily Ha'aretz quoted the premier as saying at a ceremony held on Ammunition Hill commemorating the Jerusalem Day.

"We will continue to build in Jerusalem. We will continue to develop, plan, and create in Jerusalem," Netanyahu added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks at a state ceremony marking Jerusalem Day, which celebrates the conquest of East Jerusalem during the 1967 Mideast War, at Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem, May 12, 2010. Israel occupied East Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast War and declared the whole city as its "eternal and undivided capital" in 1980 in a move not recognized by the international community, while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state

Jerusalem Day celebrates the conquest of the city during the 1967 Six Day War, before which Jordan controlled East Jerusalem, while Israel had the western section. Shortly after the war, Israel annexed East Jerusalem.
