国际英语新闻:2 killed, 20 injured, 100 missing in ship sinking in Peru
LIMA, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed, 20 others were injured and 100 more went missing after a ship sank on Wednesday in Amazonas River in Loreto department, northeast of Peru.
According to the preliminary reports, at least 200 people were aboard the ship. But the ship had room only for 160 people.
The accident occurred at 2 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) near Indiana district, bordering with Colombia.
Chief of the Disaster Prevention of the Regional Direction of National Defense, headquartered in Iquitos, Beverly Gonzales de Oliveira said there are 100 people missing and the rescue works are continuing.
District Chief of the Captaincy No. 5, rear admiral Rodolfo Reategui Rodriguez said to the moment the rescue teams have rescued 121 people and found two corpses.
Meanwhile, Regional Director of National Defense Robert Falcon said 20 passengers were taken to a hospital in Iquitos city, 14 miles from the accident scene.
Most of the injured were poisoned with fuel, and suffered from dislocations.
The reports said the ship sailed from Iquitos, which was overloaded due to having received more passengers and fuel barrels.
