国际英语新闻:UN chief to undertake investigation on aid flotilla raid: UNSC president
UNITED NATIONS, June 2 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon is expected to undertake an investigation over Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza, the president of the UN Security Council said here Wednesday.
"Many governments said there is a need for an investigation and the Council expects the secretary-general to undertake it," Mexican UN Ambassador Claude Heller, who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for June, told a press conference here.
There is "a lot of concern on the follow-up" over the investigation, Heller said, specifying such factors as who will be in charge of the investigation, as well as the "interpretation" of Israeli responsibility to take initiative in the incident.
"We understand that secretary-general will have consultations with interested parties on this matter taking into account of course not only the investigation but the fear that this could be the sources of new violence escalation in the Middle East and the region," Heller said.
Earlier Wednesday, the United Nations' Human Rights Council decided to send an independent fact-finding mission to investigate Israel's deadly attack on the aid flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip.
The decision was included in a resolution the council passed, which also condemned the "outrageous attack" by Israel, which resulted in the killing and injuries of many innocent civilians from different countries.
Israeli navy backed with helicopters attacked early Monday morning the Gaza-bound aid flotilla in the Mediterranean international waters with live ammunition and gas bombs, killing at least 10 people on board and injured over 30 others.
