国际英语新闻:Euro rises against U.S. dollar as worries about Spain ease
NEW YORK, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The euro rose against the U.S. dollar on Thursday as worries about the country's debt problems eased.
The euro rose against the green back after Spain successfully raised nearly 3.5 billion euros in an auction of 10 and 30 year bonds.
The dollar fell against major currencies as the U.S. Labor Department said that the number of people filing new claims for unemployment benefits increased sharply after three weeks of decline.
Initial claims for jobless benefits rose by 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 472,000, the highest level in a month, as states reported more claims in the construction, manufacturing and educational service sectors.
The euro rose to 1.2379 dollars in late trading in New York from 1.2314 dollars late Wednesday.
The British pound rose to 1.4810 dollars from 1.4793 dollars, while the dollar inched up to 90.82 Japanese yen from 91.40 yen.
The dollar fell to 1.1126 Swiss francs from 1.1293 francs, but rose to 1.0284 Canadian dollars from 1.0242 Canadian dollars.
