国际英语新闻:Dollar mixed as Europe debt worries ease
NEW YORK, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The dollar traded mixed against major currencies on Friday as worries about debt problems in Europe eased.
With no major economic data or news from the U.S. market, investors continued to focus on Europe. European Union leaders said they would publish results of "stress tests" of Europe's 25 biggest banks in July. Analysts believe that this measure will bring more transparency into those banks' financial stability.
Meanwhile, Spanish bond auction of 10- and 30-year notes was met with strong demand on Thursday, which helped ease concerns about the nation's ability to meet its debt obligations this year. And on Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy voiced his support for Spain. On behalf of the 27-nation group, he said that "we don' t believe there is a problem" in Spain.
On Friday, the euro inched lower against the greenback, but still stayed above the level of 1.23 dollars.
In late New York trading, the euro dipped to 1.2364 dollars from 1.2379 dollars late Thursday, and the British pound edged lower to 1.4799 dollars from 1.4810 dollars.
In other trading, the dollar fell to 90.73 Japanese yen from 90. 82, slipped to 1.1098 Swiss francs from 1.1126, and dipped to 1. 0222 Canadian dollars from 1.0284 late Thursday.
