国际英语新闻:DPRK urges maintenance of peace, stability on Korean Peninsula

PYONGYANG, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) official news agency KCNA on Friday urged an examination of the truth of the "Cheonan" case and to make a correct judgment favorable for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The KCNA said in a commentary that "a touch-and-go situation" is now prevailing on the Korean Peninsula. If some forces persist in their anti-DPRK moves based on unilateral "results of investigation," they will have to bear full responsibility for the ensuing consequences.

The commentary said the developed countries of the Group of Eight (G-8) that linked the "Cheonan" case with the DPRK only showed sinister political purposes and was an insult to the DPRK.

The G-8 issued a joint statement in Canada on June 26 urging the DPRK to stop all of its attacks and threats against South Korea and to support the efforts of South Korea to examine the truth of the "Cheonan" case.

The 1,200-ton "Cheonan" warship with 104 crew members onboard sank March 26 near the maritime border with the DPRK after an unexplained explosion. Only 58 sailors were rescued after the sinking.

South Korean investigators on May 20 said the results of their investigation showed the "Cheonan" was sunk by a DPRK torpedo.

A spokesman for the DPRK National Defense Commission issued a statement on May 20 rejecting the investigation and asked to send an inspection group to South Korea to verify material evidence. However, South Korea rejected that request.
