国际英语新闻:"Black September" leader died in Damascus

DAMASCUS, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Mohammed Oudeh, one of the leaders of the famous radical faction "Black September" and the mastermind of 1972 Munich raid, died of kidney disease on Saturday in Damascus.

The 73-year-old Palestinian nationalist, known as Abu Daoud, was born in Jerusalem in 1937. He planned the deadly raid against the Israeli sports delegation at Munich Olympics in 1972 which left 11 Israeli athletes, two Germans and five Palestinian guerrillas killed.

The bloody raid led to a series of assassinations of high-level Palestinian officials by suspected Israeli retaliations.

In his book "Palestine" published in 1999, Daoud admitted the responsibility for organizing and preparing the assault. However, He denied it was a "terrorist act."

Xinhua correspondent witnessed Daoud's funeral which was held Saturday evening in the Yarmouk refugee camp near Damascus. His coffin was wrapped in the Palestinian flag. Hundreds of mourners carry the coffin, wave the Palestinian flags and chanted the slogan against Israel.
