国际英语新闻：Security Council strongly condemns suicide bombings in Iran

UNITED NATIONS, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday condemned "in the strongest terms" the suicide bombings in southeastern Iran, which left at least 27 people dead, and underlined the need to bring those responsible for the terrorist attacks to justice.

The condemnation was contained in a statement read to the press here by Nigerian UN Ambassador Uche Joy Ogwu, who holds the rotating Council presidency for July.

"The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks that occurred in Zahedan, Iran, on July 16, 2010, causing numerous deaths and injuries," the statement said.

"The members of the Security Council express their condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and the Government of Iran," the statement said.

The suicide bombings took place in southeastern Iran as people are gathering in a mosque in Zahedan, capital of Sistan- Baluchestan province, to mark the annual Guards Day, killing 27 people and injuring 270 others, including 11 in serious condition, reports said.

The Iranian rebel group, Jundallah, claimed the responsibility for the deadly suicide bombings, reports said.

"The members of the Security Council underline the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism to justice, and urge all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Iranian authorities in this regard," the statement said.
