国际英语新闻：Senate committee green-lights Kagan as U.S. Supreme Court Justice

Kagan was nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Stevens. She faced the Senate panel's grilling on hot-button topics before the Fourth of July recess. She defended her impartiality as well as her modesty if she is to become the high court justice.

"If confirmed ... I will do my best to consider every case impartially, modestly, with commitment to principle, and in accordance with law," said Kagan.

If Kagan was confirmed by the Senate, the Supreme Court would have three female justices. The other two are Ruth Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, who was also nominated by Obama.
