GENEVA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- At least one person died and 42 were injured after a tourist train derailed in southern Switzerland on Friday, the official swissinfo.ch news website reported.

The last three carriages of the train, which was traveling in the Alps in canton Valais, came off the track shortly after midday. Two carriages tipped over and one derailed but remained upright, according to the report.

A derailed carriage of the Glacier Express tourist train lies on its side near Fiesch in the southern part of Switzerland in this July 23, 2010 police handout picture. One of Switzerland's best-known tourist trains, the Glacier Express, derailed on Friday at the peak of the holiday season, killing one and leaving about 40 injured, a railway official said. The Swiss news agency ATS reported that most of the injured were Japanese tourists. Six of them were in a serious condition.

Police said that at least six people were seriously injured. A guide accompanying a group of tourists who was on the train told swissinfo.ch that a number of the injured were Japanese.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.
