国际英语新闻:Dollar rebounds as consumer confidence revives
NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rebounded against major currencies in late New York trading on Tuesday, as a report showed U.S. consumer confidence rose slightly in October.
The Conference Board, an independent research association, said in a report on Tuesday that the index of consumer attitudes rose to 50.2 in October from a revised 48.6 in September. However, the reading still remained near the historically low level as worry about the jobless issue still existed.
The euro against the dollar failed to hold above the 1.40 level in early trading session. The pair traded below 1.39 later.
The dollar rebounded strongly against the yen to near 81.50, edging away from its 15-year low after Japan's Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda warned that the government would "act decisively" in currency markets if needed.
However, the concern about the Fed's likely quantitative easing policy still dragged the dollar's continuous upward trend, according to some analysts. The only thing that the market was not sure was the time and scale of the new monetary policy.
In late Tuesday trading, the dollar bought 81.49 Japanese yen, comparing with 80.85 late Monday, and the euro fell to 1.3850 dollars from 1.3976.
The British pound rose to 1.5835 dollars from 1.5748. The dollar rose from 0.9707 to 0.9861 against the Swiss franc, and also rose to 1.0246 Canadian dollars from 1.0186.
