In New York City, voters also arrived early to cast their votes.
Sascha Segan reflected the opinion of many who believe that some candidates have voiced messages that were too harsh toward Democrats.
"Their attacks to the Democrats' policies were stupid and short- sighted," he said of Republicans.
Alva Rogers, a fiction writer in New York, said Obama is not to blame for U.S. economic woes.
"He didn't create the economic problems. It is part of the global economic crisis," she said, echoing the sentiments of many who say that Obama inherited an economic mess from the previous administration.
