“品味北京”展亮相2014年APEC领导人会议周
'This is Beijing' has opened at the China National Convention Center, a major venue for the 2014 APEC economic leaders week. The exhibition displays the culture, tradition and scientific innovation of the capital city to a wider audience.
"This Is Beijing" presents artworks that you don't usually see. These may look like ordinary egg shell paintings. But if you look carefully, the pictures on the surface are not painted, but embroidered. All of them are made by folk artist Sun Shuo, who has been turning egg shells into art for decades.
"Egg shell art has a long history. More than two thousand years ago in the Warring States Period people started painting on egg shells. And later there were engravings and embroideries. I feel so honored that I still carry on this art today," Sun said.
Facial designs of Peking Opera, or Lian pu, are another highlight of the show. Red, yellow, white, black and green are the main colors, and each represents different characters.
Modern artworks are also on display.
More than 2,600 folk artists have brought their handicrafts to the "This is Beijing" exhibition, which will surely help more people, including those attending the APEC meetings, to better understand China's capital city.
