World Bank President Jim Yong Kim says the Indian economy is expected to grow 6.4 percent in 2015. The president of the World Bank also said at an investment summit in the western state of Gujarat that expectations are growing for the future development of India's economy.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim says there's much reason for optimism because of India's economic potential.

"We project that India will be a bright spot in otherwise mediocre global economic outlook," Jim said. "Its economy, according to our projections, is expected to grow 6.4 percent this year and even faster in 2016. In addition, Prime Minister Modi and his government are quickly putting in place the building blocks for even more rapid growth, streamlining the national regulatory structure, for example, using public funds more efficiently and promoting social inclusion."

Jim also said at Sunday's summit that the World Bank has a vision for implementing projects for sustainable and exclusive economic growth in the 21st century. But that could be a challenging task. India has 1.2 billion people, and 100 million of them still live on less than one dollar a day. To realize this goal, Jim said India has to follows a path of rapid growth that benefits all Indians.

"Together the World Bank group and the government of India will build on decades of effective collaboration, which includes iconic projects like the Green Revolution, the White revolution, the roads, bridges, and rail network that will link this vast land and campaigns to tackle polio, tuberculosis, HIV AIDS and leprosy," Jim said. "We will offer technical expertise and share knowledge on a variety of issues central to the country's accelerated economic development."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he is depending on young people to turn India from a country of IT professionals and low-paid unskilled workers into a manufacturing and export powerhouse through his "Make in India" initiative. The government has a goal to provide at least some skills to 500 million people by 2022.
