The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution aimed at disrupting human trafficking and smuggling of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea.
The resolution pays particular attention to the area near the coast of Libya, and authorizes member states to inspect suspected vessels and to seize those that are used for smuggling or trafficking. The resolution will last for one year.
In August, the UN Refugee Agency said the number of refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean route has exceeded 300,000 this year. Some 2,500 refugees and migrants are estimated to have died or gone missing during the journey.
