"A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness" earned Pakistani director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy an Oscar award this year. And her achievement has helped to inspire the Pakistani film industry, with its "Lollywood" in Lahore.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has made history as the first ever Pakistani to win two Oscars.

"You know Pakistan is blowing up on the social media. It is so fantastic to do this for my country on this important issue. We are really gratified. Thank you, thank you," she said.

Her documentary, 'A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness', centres on the issue of honour killings, and has just won the Oscar for Best-Short-Subject Documentary Film.

This is the second win for Obaid-Chinoy. In 2012, her short film about acid attacks - named 'Saving Face' - won her and fellow director, Daniel Junge, the coveted award.

Back in Karachi, Pakistani filmmakers are at work trying to provide an alternative to the morbid narrative that often dominates international news media.

Theirs is a Pakistan where love flourishes, and music and laughter prevail.

"There is, people see a marketability, a return on investment, and therefore people are making more and more films, whether it is a low budget three hundred thousand dollar film or an eight or nine hundred thousand dollar film. And because Indian films were allowed back in, there has been an increase in the audiences going to the cinema. And it has provided, I think, a very healthy competition to filmmakers here," said Mehreen Jabbar, the director.

Jabbar sees the Pakistani film industry embracing diverse topics.

"There has been a range of themes. It is not just one kind of cinema that is coming out of Pakistan. You see varied storytelling, and different kinds of styles and genres; and I hope they are sustained and we don't fall into the trap of formula film. The exciting time is that it's new, and people want to experiment," Jabbar said.

This year has already seen the record-breaking release of 'Ho Mann Jahaan', which opened at 85 cinemas across Pakistan on the 1st of January. It has become Pakistan's highest-grossing film, taking in more than a million U.S. dollars so far.

With a younger generation of film-makers, movie goers, and buoyant Oscar hopes, the Pakistani film industry is thriving.
