Describe a time when you encouraged someone to do something that he/she didn’t want to do.
You should say:
Who he or she is
What you encouraged him/her to do
How he/she reacted
And explain why you encouraged him/her to do it
There is one time that sticks in my mind – the time when I had to really persuade a friend of mine to come out with us on a two-night trip in a village a few hours outside of Beijing. I can’t recall the exact name of the place off-hand, because it’s not a really well-known tourist site or anything like this. It’s a small, really old village set in the foothills of a low mountain range, and it’s famous for a particular type of roast fish, and oven-roasted lamb leg. It’s also got quite a few really interesting mountain walks around it, and a couple of places of historical interest – a temple dedicated to fertility, where in ancient times women would go to if they were having problems in conceiving, and a Taoist cave. I, and two friends had been there before a couple of times and we were fairly familiar with the village, and knew a really cool place to stay – a sort of family-run guest house where you could rent bedrooms around a central courtyard in the oldest part of the village. Anyway, one friend of mine really didn’t fancy coming, because I think she didn’t like the idea of staying in an old village, in fairly basic accommodation, and was concerned about being cold at nights and things like this. She really likes her creature comforts, you see, and doesn’t like hiking in hills and exerting herself with physical activities! It took me a few days to encourage her that it would do her good, it would be an interesting cultural experience, character-building and adventurous. She was very reluctant, at first, and didn’t really like me pressurizing her, but after a couple of days of convincing her it was genuinely a lovely place with friendly locals and excellent food, she came round and agreed. I sincerely felt that it would do her good to get out of the city for a bit and have a new experience, a shared experience with us. Also, I love her company, she’s fun and entertaining even though she’s a bit spoilt!
