  1. do something to death

不要按照字面意思理解成“做什么做到死”,其实它是指to do or perform something so often that people become tired of seeing or hearing it.

That joke’s been done to death.

还有一个跟它差不多意思的用法:get old (to be annoying or boring due to repetition)

Titanic is my all-time favorite movie. Many people may think it’s been done to death, but I could watch it over and over again, I mean, it never gets old for me. (I will never get tired or bored of this movie.)

  2. get out of

其实除了get out of here之外,它有如下两个常见用法:

  第一,指“逃避责任或义务”(to avoid a responsibility or duty),例如:

We promised we’d go—we can’t get out of it now.

I wish I could get out of going to that meeting.

第二,指“摆脱某种习惯”(to stop having a particular habit, to break the habit),例如:

I can’t get out of the habit of waking at six in the morning.

I wish I could get out of doing my homework. I don’t like to do my homework.

I know I should keep good hours, but I just can’t get out of the habit of staying up late.

  3. be cut out for something

这个短语的意思是to have the qualities and abilities needed for something.

He’s not cut out for teaching.

He’s not cut out to be a teacher.

I’m thinking about changing my career path, coz I don’t think I’m cut out to be a XX. I mean, I don’t have what it takes to be a qualified XX.

  4. stand up for

站起来,就是“力挺”,to support or defend somebody or something. 例如:

You must stand up for your rights.

She had learnt to stand up for herself.

与之类似的还有speak up for, “为...发声”, to say what you think clearly and freely, especially in order to support or defend somebody or something.

I prefer to make friends with those who can always stand up for their friends and family.

  5. shine

Shine可以表示to be very good at something.

He failed to shine academically but he was very good at sports.

She has set a shining example of loyal service over four decades.

I’m planning to find a job that’s mechanics related, coz this is where I shine.

She was a born actor. She belongs to the stage, I mean, that’s where she shines.
