When I was one-and-twenty

I heard a wise man say,

Give crowns and pounds and guineas

But not your heart away;

Give pearls away and rubies,

But keep your fancy free.

But I was one-and-twenty,

No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty

I heard him say again,

The heart out of the bosom

Was never given in vain;

This paid with sighs aplenty

And sold for endless rue.

And I am two-and-twenty,

And oh, this true, this true.

我二十一岁那年

我二十一岁那年,

听到一位智者说:

银币、英镑、金币皆可抛,

你的心可不能给人;

珍珠、红宝石可割舍,

但情窦勿开,保持逍遥自在。

但我当时才二十一岁,

跟我讲这些话是没用的。

我二十一岁那年,

又听过他这么说:

胸膛内的一颗心,

绝非可以白白掏出给人;

换来的会是声声叹息感喟

出卖所得的会是无穷的悔恨。

如今我已二十二岁,

唉!讲得真对!真对!
