Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe3--

Farewell4 to the Highlands, farewell to the North!
The birthplace of valor5, the country of worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove6,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow!
Farewell to the straths7 and green valleys below！
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods8!
Farewell to the torrents9 and loud-pouring floods!

Northern part of Scotland;
2 a-chasing: chasing (a-prefix used before verbal), going after;
3 roe: also roe deer, a type of small deer;
4 farewell: say goodbye;
5 valor: great bravery;
6 rove: roam, wander;
7 strath: a flat, wide river valley;
8 wild-hanging woods: wood covering steep
mountain slopes or reaching the edge of precipices;
9 torrent: violent rushing water.
