Feyenoord jump to 2nd in Dutch premier league table

BRUSSELS, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Feyenoord rose to second in the Dutch premier league table after trouncing visitors VVV Venlo 4-1 on Saturday night.

Luigi Bruins opened the scoring for Feyenoord at the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam at the fifth minute with a superb lob, but Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda equalized for Venlo at the 13th minute with a free kick.

Feyenoord's star defender Giovanni Van Bronckhorst regained the Rotterdamers' lead at the 33rd minute, and Michael Mols made it 3-1 for the hosts at the 44th minute.

Midfielder Nuri Sahin of Turkey sealed a great victory for Feyenoord at the 58th minute, steering his shot into the far corner of the goal.

It was the second consecutive win for Feyenoord, which, with 54points out of 29 matches, eclipsed Ajax to take the No. 2 spot in the league table.

With five matches still to play in the season, Feyenoord have kept alive its slim hopes of taking the league title.

Ajax, with 53 points, have two games in hand, and will play at home against lowly Willem II on Sunday.

In other actions on Saturday, NAC Breda defeated Excelsior 2-0,Twente beat Vitesse in a 4-3 thriller, and De Graafschap were held to a goalless draw by visitors Heracles Almelo.

Defending champions PSV Eindhoven, with two games in hand, still lead the league table by five points over Feyenoord. Ajax has slipped to third, followed by Breda, Heerenveen and Groningen.
