Zhang Liangliang to be lone Chinese contender in foil quarterfinal

(BEIJING, April 20) -- Zhang Liangliang defeated compatriot Lei Sheng 15-13 here on Sunday in the Men's Individual Foil Elimination Round of 16 of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 FIE World Championships at the Fencing Hall of National Convention Center. He will be the only Chinese to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the other matches involving Chinese contenders, Tao Lejia lost to world No. 1 Andrea Baldini 5-15; world No. 4 Erwan Le Pechoux of France beat Huang Liangcai 15-10; and Li Haifeng lost 14-15 to Radoslaw Glonek of Poland.

World No. 5 Benjamin Kleibrink of Germany defeated Slawomir Mocek of Poland; Ota Yuki of Japan trounced Russian Alexey Khovansky 15-6; Italian Andrea Cassara prevailed over French competitor Gregory Koenig; and Russia's Alexey Cheremisinov downed Peter Joppich 15-8.

The quarterfinal will see the following pairs duel: Baldini vs. Zhang; Le Pechoux vs. Cassara; Ota vs. Cheremisinov; and Kleibrink vs. Glonek
