Day four roundup: Sudan and Malaysia claim first golds

(BEIJING, May 25) -- The finals of 12 events were staged at National Stadium on Sunday, the final day of the "Good Luck Beijing 2008" China Athletics Open. Non-Chinese athletes participated in eight events, with Sudan and Malaysia having their first tastes of gold.In the Women's 800m Final, Amna Bakhit from Sudan came in first with a time of 2:06.44, improving on her heat time of 2:06.73 by 0.29 seconds. Liu Qing of China finished second with a time of 2:06.81 while Zhang Liqiu finished third in 2:06.88.Though Bakhit's compatriot, William Filip, missed the gold medal in the Men's 800m, he managed to take away the bronze in 1:49.40. Chinese athlete, Li Xiangyu took the gold medal with his personal best time of 1:48.39, while Xia Xudong came in second in 1:48.91.Malaysia claimed its first gold medal in the Men's High Jump. Lee Hup Wei won the gold medal with a jump of 2.27 meters. Chinese athletes Wang Chen and Zhao Kuansong came in second and third with jumps of 2.24 meters and 2.20 meters, respectively.In the Men's 5000m, Damian Paul Chopa from Tanzania took his country's second gold with a time of 14:04.29. Second place finisher, Wu Wen-Chien took the silver in 14:08.15, while Cheng Tao took the bronze in 14:08.54.Both the Women's and Men's 4x400m Relay golds went to non-Chinese athletes. The Women's event was taken by the Japanese in 3:33.23, and Chinese teams took second and third place with 3:35.13 and 3:35.52. The Australians topped the Men's relay in 3:03.71, while the Japanese team clinched the silver in 3:05.51 and the Chinese team the bronze, with 3:09.29.The four-day China Athletics Open attracted 154 foreign athletes to test out the new Bird's Nest and prepare for the August Games. Among the six countries -- Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Sudan and Tanzania -- that took part in this final Good Luck Beijing event at the venue, Japan led with 4 golds, 5 silvers and 1 bronze. Australia was in second place with 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals, while China claimed 3 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze.
