Ennis out of Beijing Games

(BEIJING, June 2) -- British Olympic heptathlon hopeful Jessica Ennis was forced to give up any chance of competing in the Beijing Olympic Games after suffering a fracture in her right ankle, the UK Athletics' website confirmed on Monday.

The 22-year-old heptathlete sustained the injury at an event in Gotiz, Austria, over the weekend. A medical scan revealed that the extent of her injury is such that she is not likely to fully recover in time to compete in the Beijing Olympic Games only a few months away.

Ennis placed fourth at the Osaka World Championships last year.

The athlete said she was very upset about missing out on her first Olympics, but she is determined to make a full and speedy recovery.

"This is nothing but terrible luck and is a sickening blow for Jess," UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins said.
