The city of Chania hosted the 60th annual edition of "Venizelia International Meeting" on Saturday (7) in which about 150 athletes from 30 countries around the world were participated.

Idowu jumps world leading 17.55m

The two favorites of the men's triple jump verified the forecasts and gave a strong competition leading to the best world performance of the season. British World Indoor Champion in Valencia Phillips Idowu and Grenada's Randy Lewis were the only contender who produced jumps beyond 17 metres. Idowu was the winner with 17.55m, while Lewis followed with 17.24m.

The bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games, Russia's Danila Burkenya also participated in the event, taking fifth with 16.55m. Greece's national record holder Dimitrios Tsiamis had his best attempt at 16.88m to take third and meet the low standard for the Olympic Game, while his compatriot Konstantinos Zalagitis was fourth with 16.70m.

Gillick clocks 45.70 in the 400m

The European reigning indoor 400m champion David Gillick dominated the men's 400m race, achieving to fight off the strong resistance of Bahamas' Michael Matthieu in the last 50m of the race. The Irish champion clocked a season's best 45.70, while Matthieu was second with 46.02, leaving on third place Zimbabwe's Lewis Banda with 47.26

The favorites of the event followed the Canadian in the final classification. Russia's Olga Kucherenko improved her season's best to 6.70m to take the second place and Greece's Styliani Pilatou jumped 6.60m, also a season's best for the silver medallist of the European Indoor Championships in 2005.
