Fierce competition in round 1 of Women’s Singles at Singapore Open

(BEIJING, June 11) -- On second day of Aviva Open Singapore 2008, fierce battles were fought between shuttlers in Women's Singles.

Hongyan Pi from France beat Slovenian Maja Tvrdy 21-9, 21-16 and she will play against Firdasari Adrianti from Indonesia, who beat Ekaterina Ananina of Russia 21-14, 21-13 Wednesday morning.

Saina Nehwal of India had a hard win this morning. She and Jie yao, a Hollander, got even-handed when the game was over. Saina needed a third game to beat Jiu, winning 21-13.

Wang Chen from Hong Kong easily got upper hand and will play against Pia Zebadiah Bernadet from Indonesia. Her teammate Zhou Mi also won, though not so easily, and will encounter Petya Nedelcheva from Bulgaria on Thursday.

Finally, Korean shuttler Hye Youn Hwang beat Mingtian Fu of Singapore 20-10, 21-11 and Anna Rice of Canada beat Nicole Grether of Germany 21-13, 21-12. More games will come on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.
