(BEIJING, June 19) -- British fencer Richard Kruse looks to have secured a surprise selection for Beijing 2008 after international fencing governing body, Federation Internationale d'Escrime (FIE), reallocated places this week.

However the FIE has decided to award an unused qualification place to Kruse -- although his surprise nomination is still to be ratified by the British Olympic Association (BOA).

Kruse is considered to be Britain's best hope for a first Olympic fencing medal since 1964. He finished eighth at the Athens Olympic Games and won a silver medal at the 2006 Senior European Championships in Izmir, Turkey -- Britain's first European medal since 1936.

Graham Morrison, of the British Fencing Association told BBC Sport: "The situation is Richard has not yet been ratified by the BOA. He has been awarded a place by the international federation and it is subject to the BOA's ratification, which I'm hoping will be very soon."

Kruse will join 20-year-old Alex O'Connell in the British team if his nomination is approved.
