US Olympians shoot home titles

(BEIJING, July 9) -- The 2008 USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol saw four 2008 Olympic-qualified shooters win their respective events.Matt Emmons, gold medalist at Athens 2004 and a favorite for Beijing 2008, won with a total score of 1302.0 in the Men's Prone Rifle event (597 and 600 from two qualifying matches, and a final of 105.1). In the Men's Rapid Fire Pistol event, 2008 US Olympic team member Keith Sanderson claimed the national title and renewed the national record with his second match score of 590. In the Men's Air Pistol event, Athens 2004 Olympian and Beijing 2008 qualifier Jason Turner finished in first place with a final score of 1270.8, and he set a new national record for a match score of 587, plus a final score of 101.8. Turner's Beijing 2008 Olympic teammates Brian Beaman and Daryl Szarenski, a two-time Olympian, finished in second and third places respectively with scores of 1254.5 and 1254.0.
In Women's Air Pistol, Brenda Shinn, another Beijing 2008 qualifier, won with an overall score of 854.6. Three-time Olympian Libby Callahan, who is also going to Beijing, finished second with 832.5 Beijing 2008’s shooting tournament is scheduled for August 9 to 17.
