Canada names men's Olympic artistic gymnastics team

(BEIJING, July 9) -- Six men were selected into the Canadian men's artistic gymnastics team for Beijing 2008.

In-form Kyle Shewfelt, floor champion at Athens 2004, displayed his wares at a test competition and was recruited into the team for Beijing 2008. Joining Shewfelt on the roster are fellow Calgarians Nathan Gafuik, Adam Wong and Grant Golding, as well as David Kikuchi and Brandon O'Neill.

Ken Ikeda was named first reserve and Jared Walls second reserve. The coaches for the men's Olympic team are Edouard Iarov, National Coah and Tony Smith.

Shewfelt is a two-time Olympian while Golding, Wong and Kikuchi all competed at Athens 2004.

The men's team selection brings to 12 the number of Canadian gymnasts and trampolinists heading to Beijing, not including reserves.

Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs and Nansy Damianova ensured their spots on the women's team, and Alyssa Brown is the women's reserve. Coaches for the women's team are Katerine Dussault and Carol-Angela Orchard.

Beijing 2008's artistic gymnastics tournament is scheduled for August 9 to 19.
