Who will board the last plane to Beijing?

(BEIJING, July 11) -- The Men's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament will take place from July 14-20 in Athens, Greece, where three spots still available for the Beijing Olympic Games will be up for grabs.

The top two semifinalists will automatically qualify for the Beijing Games. The last ticket will be granted to the victorious basketball team of the final battle between the other semifinal competitors.

Host country Greece, silver-medalist of the 2007 European Championship and the 2006 FIBA World Championship, will face tough battles against South American power Brazil in group A.

Coach Panayotis Yannakis of the Greek national team is determined to secure one of the coveted tickets with a respectable lineup including Dimitris Fiamantidis, Theo Papaloukas, Vassilis Spanoulis and Antonis Fotsis.

Diamantidis and Spanoulis, the mainstays of Panathinaikos Basketball Club, and Papaloukas with CSKA will provide fabulous defense. Also on the guard line will be Nikos Zissis, who had a rather frustrating season after moving to CSKA Moscow. Under the basket, power forward Antonis Fotsis will be the one to grab rebounds, scoring from behind the arc if necessary.

Brazil, however, is in no mood to give up the dream of reliving its glory days experienced during the Oscar Schmidt era, when they were ranked as an elite team, finishing in the top six in several Olympic Games.
