Yao Ming still needs time

2008-07-14来源:
(BEIJING, July 13) -- When Houston Rockets center Yao Ming of China suffered a stress fracture in his left foot toward the end of February, causing him to miss the rest of his NBA season, the Chinese Men's National Basketball Team worried whether Yao would be able to recover in time to play for his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

But following successful surgery in early March, Yao began the road to recovery. He started to take part in training with his national team on July 12, though his foot has not fully recovered, Since he cannot take part in scrimmage matches, he hopes to use the training sessions to build up coordination with his teammates.

Yao told reporters that he expects to participate fully in all training during the latter part of July.

Since returning to China, Yao has been trying to get accustomed to playing again. He has even bought himself two official basketballs to practice on his own. "After all, I haven't played basketball in over four months, but I'm starting to get a feel for the game again." Yao said.

The Chinese men will face the United States "Dream Team" on August 10 at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium.

Jonas Kazlauskas, head coach of the China team, will work on improving his men's speed on offense and defense, but he is confident that Yao and the other team members can cooperate without any problems.

"The U.S. team has a complete lineup, but we will try our best," Yao said.
