Tweddle tweaked by rib injury

(BEIJING, August 3) -- British gymnast Beth Tweddle, 23, has chosen to forfeit the Olympic Balance Beam and Vault competitions due to her rib injury, but she still hopes to perform in the Floor Exercise and Uneven Bars.

Coach Adrian Stan said that Tweddle has been finding training difficult since Tuesday, and that her injury is "minor but unsettling."

Tweddle will stay back at Team GB's training camp in Macao for an extra three days, where she will be able to use softer mats to treat the injury before rejoining her colleagues in Beijing on Monday.

Regarding concerns over her injury, Tweddle said that she was confident of recovery before the Games start.

"The ankle's getting there," she said, "Obviously the doctors and physios are keeping a close eye on me and my personal coach is just making sure everything is staying in place."

Tweddle was the first British woman to win a gold medal on the Uneven Bars at the 2006 Denmark World Championships. As Beijing 2008 will most likely be her last Olympics, she is hoping to take home a medal and end on a high.
