Greek brothers shoot at Water Polo glory

(BEIJING, August 4) -- As they did at home in Athens four years ago, Greek Water Polo brothers Georgios and Christos Afroudakis will compete together for Olympic glory and family pride at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

"For our family, it's an honor to have two brothers in two Olympic Games," says Christos, 24.

Christos only started playing four years before 31-year-old Georgios made his senior national team debut in 1994.

The younger Afroudakis quickly made his mark by winning consecutive Most Valuable Player awards at the 2001 and 2003 FINA Junior World Championships, and the brothers were part of the Greek team that narrowly missed a medal in Athens in 2004, when Greece lost the Bronze medal match 6-5 to Russia.

Despite their family ties, Christos says he sees his brother as just another player on the Greek team - most of the time.

"We are friends, but during games I cannot separate him from my other teammates," Christos says.
