Chinese star comes to Beijing as US coach

Lang PingDuring the 2005 World Grand Prix in Ningbo, China, Chinese fans held up "Lang Ping" signs in one hand while holding the US flag in the other.

Lang, a former Chinese volleyball player who won a gold medal at the 1984 Games, has coached the US team since 2005. Rather than simply appying the ABCs of Chinese coaching to the US team, Lang has developed her own style.

"A lot of women who are good players have the potential to become good coaches," said Lang about being the team's only female coach. "I'm one of the lucky ones!"

Asked how it felt to be a Chinese superstar representing Team USA at the Olympic Games in Beijing this time, she responded with a smile. She does not feel nervous for her team, she said, and then added, "I'm just glad to be home."
