M: Helen, you must be excited at going to America to study.

F: Yeah, I've been looking forward to it for ages.

In Chinese education, students learn through memorization. The teacher is the king, and what he says is always the truth. In American education, however, much emphasis is placed on problem solving and discussion. There is very little emphasis on memorizing information. Students are taught to think for themselves. The role of the teacher is to stimulate their thinking, to get them to ask questions, challenge and even argue with the teacher and come to their own conclusions.
在中国的教育中,学生是通过背诵来学习的。老师就是王道,他说的总是真理。在美国的教育中,更多强调的是解决问题和讨论。很少强调记忆信息。学生被教育自己思考。老师的地位是鼓励他们思考,让他们问问题,挑战甚至是和老师争论,让学生自己得出结论。
