[01:01.91]Mrs Moore had worked hard all day the office, and she was lookig forward to a relaxing evening at home.
[01:08.86]Just as she walked in the door, the telephone began to ring. She dashed to answer the phone
[01:15.39]and found that the caller was a man trying to sell her some light bulbs. She refused and hung up the phone.
[01:21.45]She smelled dinner cooking and went in to see how her children were getting along with the meal.
[01:26.91]Everything was ready except setting the table,so Mrs Moore went upstairs to change clothes.
[01:33.34]Just as she reached the head of the stairs, the telephone rang again. When Mrs Moore answered it ,
[01:40.68]she found out that her husband wouldn't be home for dinner.
[01:43.76]After she changed clothes, she went back downstairs to eat.During dinner, the phone rang twice.
[01:51.88]Her sister called to ask about the family, and a group wanted her to do some volunteer work.
[01:57.94]She and the children finished dinner and began cleaning up the kitchen. The phone rang again.
[02:04.13]The neighbours wanted to borrow the garden hose.
[02:06.41]After the kitchen was cleaned,Mrs Moore sat down with a sigh to read while the children did their homework. The phone rang again.
[02:15.97]Without even answering it ,Mrs Moore called to her children,"Get ready,we're all going to a movie.""Great! But why?"
[02:25.53]"It seems that's the only way we can get away from this telephone."
[02:31.09]7. Read the following passage once. Underline the key words while reading and retell the story to your partner.
[02:41.59]Billy' s motorcycle shone in the afternoon sun and caught Billy's reflection in the fender.
[02:48.67]He had worked all summer to save enough money for this bike and it was his--all his.
[02:56.82]He strapped on his helmet, slid the new black leather gloves over his hands, then threw one leg over the vinyl seat.
[03:04.69]There was a roar of the engine as he kicked it into motion, and suddenly there he was,
[03:10.90]speeding down the street on his motorcycle.
[03:13.80]Billy' s little brother,Tommy, watched solemnly from the front door.
[03:19.26]Tommy was only eight years old, but eight was old enough, he thought,
[03:24.70]for someone to have his very own motorcycle.
[03:27.41]It didn't seem fair that Billy had a bike and Tommy didn't.
[03:32.01]So Tommy sat on the front porch, ate his candy bar,
[03:36.50]and brooded over the matter as he watched Billy slide around the corner.
[03:40.68]All he wanted was just one ride.
[03:44.16]When Billy discovered his bike missing the next morning,
[03:47.76]there was a widespread investigation by the police, his parents, and the neighbours.
[03:53.61]No one had seen the bike since the day before.
[03:57.45]As Billy walked off down the sidewalk, heading for the school bus,
[04:02.34]his attention was attracted by something black glaringat him from under a hedge.
[04:07.75]He approached slowly, then suddenly broke into a run.
[04:12.21]There under the hedge was his motorcycle with one badly dented fender.
[04:18.59]He reached for the handlebars to pull it from under the bushes.
[04:22.40]When he retracted his hand, there was a familiar sticky substance on his fingers.
[04:28.49]Tasting the brown sweetness, Billy smiled secretly to himself.
