[00:09.01]Jane and Lise have had lunch with Uncle David and Aunt Janet.
[00:15.39]The two old people are deaf,and the girls are tired because they have had to shout.
[00:21.32]They both want to leave.
[00:23.98]Lise:We'll have to leave soon,Aunt Janet.
[00:28.00]Aunt Janet:Yes.of course you can have some tea,dear.I'll go and make some.
[00:32.65]Jane:Oh no,Lise.Stop her!You'd better say it louder.
[00:36.88]Lise:WE'LL HAVE TO LEAVE.AUNT JANET.
[00:40.41]Uncle David:You can't leave yet.I want to hear some more about Canada.
[00:45.66]Lise:But I must go back and look after Malcolm.Oh dear,they didn't hear.
[00:51.33]I MUST GO BACK AND LOOK AFTER MALCOLM.
[00:55.30]Aunt Janet:Why,what's the matter witeh him?
[00:58.96]Lise:I TOLD YOU,AUNT JANET.HE ISN'T WELL.
[01:03.24]Aunt Janet:But I thought you said he was in the hotel.Where wre you staying?
[01:09.28]Lise:We're camping...WE"RE CAMPING.
[01:12.36]Aunt Janet:In this seather?Well,I'm not surprised Malcolm isn't well.
[01:17.40]Perhaps I ought to come out and see him.
[01:20.80]Lise(firmly):No.THAT'S NOT A GOOD IDEA,AUNTIE.HE'S ILL.
[01:26.02]Uncle David:What's the matter with him?
[01:28.03]Lise:He's got a cold.
[01:29.52]Jane:He's got a temperature.
[01:31.27]Lise:Oh,what's the use?HE'S GOT A COLD.
[01:35.01]Uncle David:All right,all right,we can hear.We're not deaf!
[01:42.30]Text B The Stolen Smells
[01:48.17]Many years ago in another country there lived a poor student.
[01:53.61]He had very little money.He lived in a very small room over a restaurant.
[02:00.35]His room was at the back of the building over the Kitchen.
[02:05.47]The restaurant owner was a very mean man.
[02:09.44]Nobody liked him.But he was a good cook and many people came to his restaurant.
[02:16.36]One day he was working quietly in his kitchen when he heard the poor student talking to his friend.
[02:26.29]"You must be very unhappy,"said his friend,"living in a poor room like this."
[02:32.29]"Oh no,"said the student."I am busy with my studies and I'm not interested in my room."
[02:39.69]"But you only eat plain rice-you don't have money for anything tasty."
[02:45.77]"Yes,it's true,I eat only plain rice.
[02:50.03]But the delicious smells that come from the kitchen make the rice very tasty indeed."
[02:56.20]The restaurant owner was surious.
[03:00.04]This student was stealing the smells from his kitchen.He decided to take him to court.
[03:07.38]Everybody in the court laughed when the mean man accused the student ofstealing his samlls.
[03:15.87]But the judge took him seriously.
[03:18.84]"Every man should be able to complain to the court,"he said.
[03:24.12]When the restaurant owent told the judge everyting,the judge said,"You are right.The student is guilty."
[03:32.85]The restaurant owner was delighted,but the poor student was very much afrsid.
[03:39.77]What could he do?He had only a few coins in his pocket.The judge asked the student if he had any money.
[03:48.73]The student took 5 coins from his pocket and held them out to the judge in his right hand.
[03:56.80]"Let the coins fall into your left hand,"said the judge.
[04:01.79]The courtroom was very quiet.Everyone heard the tinkle of the coins as they fell into the student's left hand.
[04:10.46]"Well,"said the judge to the restaurant owner,"you've heard his money.You've been well paid for your smells."

[04:38.52]Peter's father wants to know how his son is getting along in school.
[04:44.55]One day he asks him:

[04:54.09]Does the teacher place you in seats according to your marks?"
[04:59.47]"Yes,father,"
[05:01.48]"And what seat do you have?"
[05:04.12]"Number twenty-one."
[05:06.76]"And now many students are there in your class?"
[05:10.75]"Twenty-one,father."
[05:13.05]Several weeks pass.Peter,who is a bad student an studies very little,
[05:20.94]brings home the marks of his monthly examinations.
[05:24.91]"How are you getting along in school now,Peter?"asks his father.
[05:30.92]"Your marsk so not seem to be very good."
[05:34.55]"I am getting along much better now,father."
[05:38.57]"What is your place in the class now?"
[05:41.81]"Number twenty now."
[05:44.22]"Good.Then you are one place ahead."
