Jo: And today’s slang word is ‘flop’ F-L-O-P flop
Sun Chen: 这个词儿的本来意思就是扑通的一下倒下。
Jo: Yes, but here it’s a noun, used to talk about something which wasn’t very successful.
Sun Chen: 这么说这个词当名词使的时候,说的是什么事儿不太成功。那都用这个词儿说哪些事儿不成功呢?
Jo: It’s often used to talk about entertainment – films, plays, pop songs and so on which weren’t very successful.
Sun Chen: 要想知道怎么来用这个俚语flop,我们来听听下边这段。

Despite huge investment, the latest film from the production company was a complete flop in terms of box-office sales, and critical reviews.
Sun Chen: 这个flop,用在这儿,是说一个虽然投资很大,但是却并不成功的一部电影。
Jo: It was a complete flop.
Sun Chen: 那这么说,flop这个词儿就只能用来说娱乐圈里的这些事儿吗?
Jo: No, it can be used to talk about other things too, for example politics.
Sun Chen: 那我们再来听一个例子吧!

The latest initiative launched by the government to improve living standards for the elderly has been a total flop.
Sun Chen: 在这儿,这个flop又来说政府的一项举措。
Jo: It has been a total flop.
