Jean: Hello, this is Real English from BBC Learning English, I’m John.
Jean: And I’m Jean. Hello!
John: In Real English, we look at words and phrases that you might not find in your dictionary.
Jean: 和汉语一样,英语里也是有着非常多的成语和俗话的,所以要想能听得懂英国人日常的说话聊天,就一定要来学学这些他们常用的通俗词语。
John: Today’s word is gobsmacked – G-O-B-S-M-A-C-K-E-D gobsmacked
Jean: Gobsmacked,好像gob这个词是俚语里最的意思吧,John?
John: Yes it is…
Jean: 而smack这个词又有打人耳光的意思,那Gob再加上smacked,这个词岂不是要打人家嘴巴的意思吗?
John: Well literally yes – it does mean to be hit in the mouth. But gobsmacked is a word you use when you are so surprised about something that you don’t know what to say.
Jean: AH,听你这么一说,原来gobsmacked是形容一个人因为某事而太吃惊、太震惊了,简直像被人打着了嘴巴一样,说不出话来了,就是瞠目结舌的意思。那John,你能给我们再举个例子说明一下吗?
John: Well if you hear some very surprising news – for example…if you found out your best friend dating your brother and they never told you – you might be gobsmacked.
Jean: 那倒是,如果我刚发现我最好的朋友已经和我自己的哥哥好了好一段时间了却没告诉我,那我的反应肯定也是gobsmacked,瞠目结舌了!
John: Or maybe if Brad Pitt walked in the room now and asked you on a date – I think you would be pretty gobsmacked.
Jean: 那当然了 – 如果布拉德皮特Brad Pitt现在走进来约会我出去,我肯定更会 是gobsmacked!! 张口结舌、不知所措、说都不会话了– 唉,不过我想我 是不会有这样的艳福了,John,咱们还是给大家举个更实际的例子吧。Here’s another example.

A: I can’t believe Fred is going to be a father.
B: I know. He always talks about how much he hates kids. I was gobsmacked when he told me!
Jean: OK – 所以gobsmacked – 就是形容某人因为某事而吃惊的瞠目结舌、说不出话来的意思。
John: I have a bit of a surprise for you actually Jean.
Jean: You do?
John: 我-在-学-一点-中文。
Jean: Eh? You’re speaking Chinese – I didn’t know you could.
John: 我-学了-一段-时间啦。
Jean: Wow I don’t know what to say? You’re very good.
John: You’re gobsmacked aren’t you?
Jean: I am gobsmacked! 好了,今天我们的新词就是它了,gobsmacked – 就是吃惊得瞠目结舌的意思. That’s all for BBC Learning English
for today.
John: Yes, you’ve been listening to Real English – see you next time!
