用：用于句尾。
意：真遗憾;真可惜
例，They' }e torn down many of the ald buildings, mare's the pity_
他们拆毁了许多老式的建筑物，真可惜。
But we've got to tell the tax affice, mare's the pity.
但是，遗憾的是我们得通知税务局。

place

as if (thought） you（he,she,...)owned the place

意：放肆地;盛气凌人地;好像这地方是你们家的似的
例，Haw dare you come in here。if you owned the place?
你竟敢这么大摇大摆地走进这儿，好像这地方是自己的一样!
She ram directly into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of ginger ale, as if she owned the place.
她径直跑进厨房，自己倒了杯姜汁汽水，好像这是她自己家似的。

in the first place

用：多用来强调原来就有的反对理山或现已被证实为正确的原因。
意：最主要的原因就是，，，;一开始就一
例.I knew Lucy would be a nuisance-I didn't want her to carne in the first place_
我就知道露西烦人，一开始我就不要她来。
I didn't want to See him in the f rst place.
最主要的原因就是我不想见他。
注：该习语着重指许多原因中最重要的某一点，而且可以用来强调后来被事实证明为正确的某个要点。此用法跟有下文的in the second place相对应的in the first place不同。
