Pink slip的意思是“解雇通知书”，也叫做walking paper。这个习语要追朔到20世纪初期，表示在发给员工的周薪信封里放一张粉红色的小纸条，通知员工被解雇的噩耗。放红色字条一方面是为了避免你和其他资料混在一起，一面员工忽视而没有看到，另一方面也许是因为粉红色相对比较柔和，可能会对被解雇的员工“受伤的心灵”产生一点慰藉作用。使用时表示解雇某人可以用动词give，即为：give sb. the pink slop。
