“First job syndrome” is when you get a job early in your career, say rightafter graduation, and stay there for a long, long time to the point where itclouds knowledge of your own worth, and inhibits your ability to not only askfor more, but to credibly leave if not given it.

People with this condition starts behaving like a beaten down puppy withthe only employer they’ve ever known. A lack of confidence causes them tobelieve that no one else will have them or value them as much as their currentemployer. And, in some cases, they think it will be just as bad wherever theygo, partly because everywhere else seems like a foreign country that may or maynot even exist.

First jobbers are disadvantaged by having an information set that’s muchsmaller than people who’ve moved jobs. Experiencing the willingness of othercompanies to employ, integrate and teach you are valuable data, particularly forthe less confident.
