Sample Response 参考答案

Topic

The lecture is about two ways in which animals use plants to protect themselves from getting an illness.

Example 1

Monkeys are the example the lecturer uses to highlight animals’ use of medicinal plants. Whitefacedcapuchin monkeys ward offinsects, bacteria, and fungalinfectionsby use of the piper plant.

Example 2

Likewise, chimpanzeeseat certain leaves to keep poison out of their bodies, which also allows them to enjoy a more varied diet. These deliberate uses of an antidoteto poison are beneficial to their health.

实用表达课堂 highlight 使突出;强调  medicinal plant 药用植物  ward off 抵挡  fungal 真菌引起的  chimpanzee 黑猩猩  antidote 解毒剂   常远老师提示 by use of 意为“通过使用…”,在这里use 为名词。也可用by doing 表达“以…方式”,故本句也可写为:… by using the piper plant. varied varied / a wide variety of / diverse mix of / various 都可表达“各种各样的”,当然还有最“水”的一种:different。   听力原文 [Lecture] Surprising as it may sound, people are not the only species that has doctors! A number of animals use plants to, in effect, be their own doctors. Let’s look at a few examples of this now. As you might expect, monkeys are among the animal kingdom’s doctors. The white-faced capuchin monkey rubs itself with leaves from the piper plant. This not only repels lice and mosquitoes, but also protects the monkey against various kinds of bacteria and fungus infections! Likewise, the chimpanzees eat a lot of leaves which are high in cyanide, a deadly poison. Over time, the poison can build up in the body and make the monkey ill, or even die. But the monkeys counteract the effect of this by eating charcoal, and herbal plants. Thus the species can get the illness out of their bodies and comfort themselves. Also, by eating the leaves, they can eat a wider variety of food than they otherwise could.
