词汇辨析：学英语以来总分不清的那些词 这些区别你懂吗？

accident，incident‘大变故vs小变故’

accident：突发性的，一般为不幸事件，即“事故”。
traffic accident 交通事故
incident：小的变数、插曲，小事件，没accident那么严重。
an international incident 一次国际事件

continuous，continual‘不断与间断’

continuous：持续不断的，且可以做表语和定语
continuous pain 持续的疼痛（疼痛一直有）
continual：中间有间隔的重复，只能做定语
continual improvements in technology 技术上的不断进步（进步是间隔性的）

considerate，considerable‘体贴与量大，意义大不同’

considerate：体贴的，考虑周到的
Be a good neighbor, be considerate of those living around you.
做一个好邻居，体谅周围的人。
considerable：相当大的，值得尊敬的，重要的
We took a considerable length of time to decide.
我们花了好长时间才决定。

electric，electrical‘带电vs不带电’

electric：电的，用电的，带电的，指任何电动的或发电的装置，被修饰的物体本身可带电。
electric light 电灯
Please connect the two electric wires. 请将这两根电线接起来。
electrical：电的，与电有关的，电气科学的，指与电有关的事物，被修饰的词本身并不能带电。
electrical engineer 电气工程师
All the electrical work was done by my younger brother. 所有的电工活都由弟弟来干。
He buried himself in an electrical book. 他埋头读一本电学方面的书。

ensure，insure‘都能保证，不都保险’
表示“保证”的意思，两者通用，英国人爱用ensure，美国人爱用insure。
Our precautions ensured/insured our safety. 预防措施保证了我们的安全。
表示“保险”的意思，用insure。
After signing a contract with a professional baseball team, Jack decided to insure his pitching arm for $1 million. 和职业棒球队签约后，杰克决定为他投球的手臂投保100万美元。

historic，historical‘一个重要，一个普通’
historic：历史上著名的，具有历史意义的。强调的是事件本身具有的重大意义。
historic sites 历史遗迹
historical：历史上的，有关历史的。强调某个事件曾经的的确确发生过。
historical figures 历史人物

lie，lay‘lie过去式与动词lay同形’

lie：说谎；躺，位于。
作“说谎”的意思
过去式，过去分词，现在分词分别是：lied, lied, lying
作“躺，位于”的意思
过去式，过去分词，现在分词分别是：lay, lain, lying
He lay under a tree to sleep.
他躺在树下休息。
lay：放，搁；下蛋。过去式，过去分词，现在分词分别是：laid, laid, laying
The dog laid its ears back.
小狗把耳朵耷拉下来。
比较容易混的地方在于lay本身是一个词，又能做lie（躺，位于）的过去式。下面这句话你分清了吗？
If you like, you can lie（躺） down on your bed, laying（放） yourself in a comfortable position, and lie（说谎） to yourself that you don't like lying（躺） there, or you can imagine where you would like to lay（放） the eggs after the hens lay（下蛋） eggs.

relation，relationship‘四种不同关系’

relation有以下几个意思
指最宽泛意义上的“关系”时，relation和relationship同义。
the relation/relationship between smoking and heart disease 吸烟和心脏病之间的关系
亲戚。同义词：relative。
She was a distant relation of my wife. 她是我老婆的远房亲戚。
复数relations一般用于国与国之间，或很大的群体之间，较为正式（用于人之间特指性关系）。同义词：communication。
relations between Iraq and the U.S. 美伊关系
（在不太正式的情况也可以写作the relation/relationship between Iraq and the U.S.）
relations between blacks and whites 黑人和白人的关系
relationship除了普通“关系”，还可以指“亲密关系”，如不特别说明，一般指爱人关系。
When the relationship ended two months ago she said she wanted to die.  两个月前她失恋的时候简直想死。
the parent-child relationship 亲子关系

subject,object‘主体vs客体’

object：(n.)目标，物体，客体，宾语；（某情感或反应的）对象；(v.)反对。它的形容词形式为objective，意为“客观的，目标的”。objective还可以作名词，意为“目标，目的”。
become an object of derision 成为嘲笑对象
subject：(n.)主体，科目，主语；（批评、研究或调查的）对象(v.)使……隶属；使屈从于，通常与to连用。它的形容词形式为subjective，意为“主观的，个人的”。
a subject of conversation 对话主题

sensitive,sensible‘敏感和明智，艺术家与思考者’

sensitive：敏感的、感觉的、易受影响的，tive一般表特性。
a sensitive topic 敏感话题
sensible：明智的、合乎情理的、通情达理的、意识到的、能感觉到的，able一般表能力。
a sensible young woman 明智的姑娘
sensible of his fault 意识到他的错误

special，specific‘与众不同vs特别限定’

special：特别的，强调特别、与众不同
a special friend 特殊朋友
specific：特定的，强调限制性
His specific problems got him into trouble.
他特有的问题使自己陷入麻烦。

stuff，staff‘一个指物，一个指人’

stuff：东西、材料、素材
Put that stuff over there. 把材料放在那儿。
staff：职员
the nursing staff of a hospital 医院的护士们

technology,technique‘小技术vs大科技’

technique：技巧、技能、技术、技艺。更具体，指某项技术。
a pianist with superb technique 技术精湛的钢琴家
technology：科技（总称）、工业技术、工艺学。更抽象，指成系统的一种科技大类。
information technology 信息技术

transfer，transmit‘转移的是物体，发送的是信号’

transfer：转移，调任，转让，侧重点是转移（某物）
He transferred the package from one hand to the other. 他把包裹从一只手换到另一只手。
I transferred from Rutgers to Tulane. 我从罗格斯大学调任到杜兰大学。
transmit：传输，传导，发射，侧重点是传送（信号）
Glass transmits light. 玻璃能传播光。
