7. Advice (名词) v Advise (动词)

Let me give you some advice.
让我给你点建议。

I advise you not to do that.
我建议你不要那样做。

8. Briefly v Shortly

The chairman spoke briefly at the beginning of the conference. (for a short time)
会议开始时主席发表了简短讲话。（强调持续时间短）

Good Morning. The chairman will open the conference shortly. (in a few minutes)
早上好。主席马上就开始会议。（强调几分钟之内）

9. Principal (名词/形容词) v Principle (名词)

The School Principal has given the pupils permission to go out today.
校长允许学生们今天外出。

Our company has very high principles.
我们公司奉行高标准。

The principal issue we have here is that this project will not finish on time.
我们现在面临的主要问题是工程不能按时完成了。

10. Lie v Lay (现在时)

I was so tired that I had to lie down for 30 minutes. (No direct object)
我太累了，必须躺下休息30分钟。（无直接宾语）

The baby is tired so I shall lay her down for her nap. (Direct Object = baby)
小婴儿累了，我要把他放下来，让他睡一会。（直接宾语是“小婴儿”）
