  Bangladesh is set to re-establish upazila parishad (sub-district council) system after some 18 years by holding local elections on Jan. 22 as part of its plan to strengthen local government administration for hastening proper development throughout the nation.
  According to the country’s Election Commission, polls are going to be held in some 481 sub-districts for one chairman and two-vice chairmen posts of each sub-district council with no affiliation with political parties.

  This local government body of sub-district council will work alongside the existing than an (police station) administration.
  Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda told Xinhua on Thursday the Election Commission is all set to hold the elections for the sub-district councils. "We are now busy sending electoral materials including ballot papers and stamps," he said.
  He said they have already taken all required measures to create a congenial atmosphere for Jan. 22 elections. It will be free and fair like the country’s 9th parliamentary election held on Monday, he said.
  Bangladesh Awami Leauge led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won a landslide victory in Monday’s national polls, getting230 out of all 300 parliament seats, more than enough to form a government.
  According to the Election Commission, some 7,232 candidates including 1,029 women are contesting for the chairman and vice chairman posts of sub-district councils.
  Out of two posts of vice chairmen in each sub-district council, one post will be reserved for women only.
  The South Asian country established the sub-district council system in 1985 but later on in 1991 the system was abolished. hxen.net
  In 1985, all the thanas excepting few were upgraded to upazila parishads (sub-districts council) for strengthening local government administration. With the abolition of the upazila system in 1991, the upazila regional administrative system reverted to the earlier thana structure.
  Bangladesh’s current caretaker government after taking office on Jan. 12, 2007, decided to return to sub-district system and instructed the Election Commission to hold elections to the local government body of sub-district councils.
  Bangladesh is divided into six administrative divisions. Each division is placed under a divisional commissioner and is further subdivided into 64 districts with a deputy commissioner as the chief administrator.
  Below the district level there are the thanas (police station) which number about 490 in the country. Below the level of thana, there are rural micro areas known as unions (nearly 4,500 in number) and grams (villages, about 60,000 in number).
