[00:02.13]All I wanted was a cozy log cabin in the state of Maine,
[00:06.40]somewhere deep in the woods,
[00:08.26]to hang out under the stars.
[00:10.44]It was to be my first vacation with my boyfriend,
[00:13.85]and I wanted it to be perfect.
[00:15.79]So rather than waste money on a guidebook
[00:18.96]that was bound to be outdated
[00:20.50]before it appeared on the shelves of my local bookstore,
[00:23.24]I decided to search online.
[00:25.53]Little did I know that when I typed the words
[00:28.91]“Maine log cabin rental”at altavista.com,
[00:33.86]I was stepping into 48 hours of Internet hell.
[00:38.01]Forget dinner, forget work, forget sleep.
[00:41.61]I was glued to my computer for hours clicking
[00:45.22]from one listing to another to find the perfect hideaway.
[00:49.17]I was wrong.
[00:50.35]The first site that I tried, cyberrentals.com,
[00:54.53]grouped rentals by region
[00:56.70]but had no map to tell me where such romantic-sounding,
[01:01.05]places as Seal Cove or Owl’s Head were.
[01:04.76]So I had to log on to mapblast.com to locate each one,
[01:10.78]then return to slogging through listings.
[01:13.83]Another site, vacationspot.com,
[01:17.03]let me find 50 cabins and cottages right off,
[01:21.07]but most of the rentals turned out to be closed for the winter.
[01:25.21]I learned only after reading a lot of fine print.
[01:29.26]One day and hundreds of listings later,
[01:32.45]I was ready to throw my computer out the window.
[01:35.17]For every 10 vacation spots I looked into,
[01:38.88]I found maybe one that sounded good and more often than not,
[01:44.24]it was booked, too far away, or outrageously priced.
[01:48.09]Searching on line was really giving me a headache.
[01:51.03]I finally decided to put our log-cabin Web dreams
[01:55.18]on hold and search the old-fashioned way at a bookstore.
[01:59.00]I bought a paperback book
[02:01.09]called America’s Favorite Inns, B&Bs, and Small Hotels.
[02:07.11]I was relieved to see that each city
[02:09.95]was neatly pinpointed on a detailed map,
[02:12.58]and most had good descriptions to help me figure out
[02:16.08]where in Maine we should go in the first place.
[02:19.04]Then I found it:
[02:20.99]an old inn on the southern coast of Maine
[02:24.27]that rented us one of its best rooms for $100 a night.
[02:28.99]Guess what? It didn’t have a Website.
[02:32.05]I took my chances based on a good review,
[02:34.99]a great location and a bargain price.
[02:37.51]It wasn’t a log cabin, and it was far from the woods,
[02:41.55]but there were lace curtains,
[02:43.75]a hardwood floor and a quilt on the bed.
[02:46.26]With the ocean outside our window and a fireplace in the room,
[02:50.51]my holiday was just as cozy as I dreamed it would be.
