[00:03.22]Walking down a path through some woods in Georgia,
[00:08.04]I saw a water puddle ahead.
[00:10.54]I angled my direction to go around it.
[00:13.28]As I reached the puddle,
[00:15.45]I was suddenly attacked!
[00:17.11]Yet I did nothing for the attack was so uNPRedictable
[00:21.04]and from a source so totally unexpected.
[00:24.11]I was startled as well as unhurt,
[00:27.28]despite having been struck four or five times already.
[00:30.99]I backed up a foot and my attacker stopped attacking me.
[00:35.58]Instead of attacking more,
[00:37.34]he hovered in the air on graceful butterfly wings in front of me.
[00:42.37]Had I been hurt I wouldn’t have found it amusing,
[00:45.97]but I was unhurt, and I was laughing.
[00:48.71]After all, I was being attacked by a butterfly!
[00:52.76]Having stopped laughing,
[00:54.29]I took a step forward.
[00:55.81]My attacker rushed me again.
[00:58.01]He rammed me in the chest with his head and body,
[01:01.28]striking me over and over again with all his might,
[01:05.32]still to no avail.
[01:07.08]For a second time,
[01:08.95]I retreated a step while my attacker relented in his attack.
[01:13.21]Yet again, I tried moving forward.
[01:16.37]My attacker charged me again.
[01:18.79]I was rammed in the chest over and over again.
[01:22.72]I wasn’t sure what to do, other than to retreat a third time.
[01:27.54]After all, it’s just not everyday that one is attacked by a butterfly.
[01:33.33]This time, though,
[01:34.98]I stepped back several paces to look the situation over.
[01:38.91]My attacker moved back as well to land on the ground.
[01:43.50]That’s when I discovered why my attacker was charging me only moments earlier.
[01:49.63]He had a mate and she was dying.
[01:52.14]She was beside the puddle where he landed.
[01:55.11]Sitting close beside her,
[01:57.06]he opened and closed his wings as if to fan her.
[02:00.25]I could only admire the love and courage of that butterfly in his concern for his mate.
[02:06.49]He had taken it upon himself to attack me for his mate’s sake,
[02:11.38]even though she was clearly dying and I was so large.
[02:15.45]He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life,
[02:20.81]should I have been careless enough to step on her.
[02:23.65]Now I knew why and what he was fighting for.
[02:27.36]There was really only one option left for me.
[02:30.54]I carefully made my way around the puddle to the other side of the path,
[02:35.13]though it was only inches wide and extremely muddy.
[02:38.73]His courage in attacking something thousands of times larger and heavier
[02:43.54]than himself just for his mate’s safety justified it.
[02:47.59]I couldn’t do anything other than reward him
[02:50.78]by walking on the more difficult side of the puddle.
[02:53.93]He had truly earned those moments to be with her, undisturbed.
[02:58.42]I left them in peace for those last few moments,
[03:01.61]cleaning the mud from my boots when I later reached my car.
[03:05.21]Since then, I’ve always tried to remember the courage of that butterfly
[03:09.80]whenever I see huge obstacles facing me.
[03:12.74]I use that butterfly’s courage as an inspiration
[03:16.58]and to remind myself that good things are worth fighting for.
