A year after a scandal broke out over stray cats being shipped to dinner tables in south China, the taste for cat meat apparently persists, and along with it, the trade in abandoned cats.
Last week, cat lovers in the northern city of Tianjin rescued around 1,300 cats that were bound for meat dealers in the southern province of Guangdong, Xinhua reports. The cats were found in cages in a store in the city, a few of them, including a pregnant female, already dead.
While the dramatic rescue underscores increasing awareness and activism over animal rights in China, it also raises other concerns. One of the rescue volunteers, a man surnamed Wang, told Xinhua that the cats had been injected with stimulants to keep them alive during transportation and that he expected more to die once the effects of the drugs wore off.
For the surviving cats, their longer-term welfare also poses a dilemma. Since China doesn't have established animal shelters to house abandoned pets, the cats are receiving ad hoc support, kept in cages in a couple unused classrooms at a Tianjin primary school while they wait for people to claim or adopt them. They rely on donations of food from the public.
Lu Di, chairwoman of the Beijing-based China Small Animal Protection Association, told Xinhua an animal shelter would be set up in Tianjin to house the cats as part of a broader campaign to create shelters in 10 cities across China.
But Wang, the rescuer, said he doubted that more than 20% of the rescued cats could be housed in the new shelter. 'If we set the remaining 80% free, they will probably be caught and traded again,' he said, according to Xinhua.
