Prince William and fiancee Kate Middleton - whose birth name is really Catherine - have been forced to change the design of their wedding souvenir plates, mugs and trinket boxes to avoid crude jokes.

Commemorative items were going to display the initials of the couple as WC, before designers spotted the gaffe and switched them.

'When the collection was being designed they immediately noticed the problem,' a source at the Palace tells The Sun.

'If they followed tradition with the man's name first it would have been an embarassing royal flush.'

Princess-to-be Kate, 29, will now be the first royal bride ever to have her initial featured above the groom's on the official souvenir china.

The English fine bone china plates, tankards and pillboxes will now feature the initials CW, on a duck-egg blue background, surrounded by the words: 'To celebrate the Marriage of Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton.'
